On 31st December, 1915, the 1st Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) battalion of 19 Brigade, 33rd Division, were in support trenches on the Loos battlefield, just north of the Hohenzollern Redoubt. Shell fire was a constant danger here and elsewhere on the Western Front and on this day two men from the battalion were killed by a shell that landed on a road to the rear of the trenches. One of these men was George Kemp.
